June 1--Throwing Up
All right team, I'm gonna do my best to remember what happened today, but it was a pretty rough day, so I don't know how much I've got in the tank. I woke up this morning around 3am having weird dreams about cured meats. And my stomach felt a little off, and sure enough, after like four minutes in the bathroom just sitting by the toilet waiting, I threw up. What was I throwing up you might ask? Remember all that great Indian food I was raving about in my last post? Ugh, it literally makes my stomach sick just thinking about it. Funnily enough, I’m not sure if that was what made me sick, but it was the majority of my stomach contents, so into the toilet bowl it went! I ended up going to bed like 30 minutes later, but then I was up again at 4:30 and 6:30 in the bathroom, sprawled out on the bathroom floor, barfing. Eventually at around 7:45 I decided it was time to get up.
If I’m weighing when the best time on this trip would be to get sick, I would say this week would be the best time, but MAN that didn’t make it any better. My angel roommate went and checked if they had 7-Up at the bar of the hotel and got two bottles for me before we left that morning, and thankfully we didn’t have to get on the bus till 9:45, so I took my time getting ready and just taking it slow. Pepto-Bismol kept me upright for that long, and then we got on the bus to drive an hour and a half to the outskirts of Oviedo. Because my sleep schedule got so messed up during the night, I was able to sleep most of the bus ride...which was DEFINITELY for the best considering I got sick to my stomach sitting upright and awake just in the last ten minutes of the bus ride. Popping open my first 7-Up and some Pepto Bismol tablets with it, we hiked some seven minutes up to the first building we were going to see. I will say, it was actually one of the coolest and best-preserved buildings we have visited so far, but between my queasy stomach, little sleep, and no food/drink in my body, I was pretty out of it.
After that building, we walked a bit more and went to another building where I was just trying to stay upright and standing. I don’t know, it’s hard because my family and I have always pushed through sickness. Unless it is really bad, we can do what we need to do and get through the symptoms of illness. So I’m walking around with the group and keeping up with everyone, but I am super low energy and super out of it socially. So all these people keep asking if I’m going to stay on the bus (instead of going to see the buildings we drove here for), or how I’m feeling, and yes, I’m fine in the sense that I’m not actively throwing up, but I’m far from 100% capacity...but I’m doing more than probably the average sick person is, so I’m sending all these mixed signals. Anyway, we finished at the two buildings and drove another hour to Oviedo to have a quick 45 minute lunch, the majority of which I spent laying on the grass in the park. Then another hour and 20 minutes to our hotel – where I ended my day. At that point it was 4 p.m., I had done a fair amount with the group, and I was about out of energy.
Unfortunately I had to miss out on the bus ride into the mountains and free time everyone had to see the two lakes up where we were, but I knew I needed to rest to recover and I wanted to be ready for the beach tomorrow. So I slept, called my mom, went and bought bananas and lime-lemon drinks (couldn’t find sprite ;) and waited for everyone to come back.
After a dinner where I mostly ate bread, I had an early night in to try and recover completely.
Here are pictures from the day: walking up to two buildings, laying down in various places, and the cute town where we stayed that evening (the last picture was taken by Isaac, and not me, so I can't take credit ;))
