June 7--Curd? No THANK you!
Just to preface this, I’d like everyone to know that I am writing this on the evening of the 8th and I am EXHAUSTED, so if my writing isn’t as good as usual, I’ really sorry, I’m just exhausted
When we got into town, we showered, cleaned our clothes, and then headed to one of the two markets in town. And let me tell you, when I ordered a bacadillo (little bites translated literally) I didn’t realize $5 footlongs were back! For 5.50 euro I got THIS bad boy! It was a FANTASTIC lunch after a soggy hike. Other than that, today was just run of the mill – got some good sellos, had a good hike, the dinner especially was tasty. But, curd made a reappearancw, and like a wofl in sheep's clothing, it came in a new a tastier looking form! SO we had a tasty veggie soup for starters, chicken for our entrée, and then what I assumed was a nice, classic cheese cake. But I was FOOLED! Several people commented on the flavor of the cake, and as soon as I tasted it, I knew, my good old friend curd had come back to rear its ugly head!
You know, I’ve gotta say that YESTERDAY I was not feeling those 20 miles, but today I WAS! Thankfully it was overcast and rainy the whole day, so on top of being sore, we did not have to worry about sunburn. I did have to worry about my pack getting wet, but we figured it out
Speaking of sunburn, one of the other students asked me a question a few days ago that I honestly found hilarious. To preface the telling of this question, I should explain that I wear sunscreen religiously, wear a wide brim hat practically everyday, and encourage people to do the same. So one of the girls on the study abroad comes up to me and asks, “So Glo, is there a reason you don’t like getting sunburned?” Like she asked this in COMPLETE sincerity. My first response was two words – skin cancer – but then I also explained that getting sunburned just in general is terrible. Your skin hurts, you feel hot all the time, your skin peels when it heals. The real question should be, what do you LIKE about sunburns?! I just thought that was the strangest question because I feel like the answer is PRETTY obvious. But we didn’t have to worry about it at all today which was nice.
Along with rain, we saw so MANY cows today – girl cows, boy cows, big cows, little cows, milk cows, horned cows, so many different cows! And they were all just so adorable. You know, I have come to discover that I much prefer hills to flat terrain when hiking for an extended amount of time. Although flat is easier physically, mentally it is harder because there is no variation. Although hills can be taxing going up OR down them, it does add variety and interest. So the hike today was very welcome because it was cool, and it was more hilly than a lot of the recent segments, so it felt a lot shorter.
